LOMONOSOV BRIDGE Measuring 57 meters long and 14 meters wide and uniquely comprising a medieval design, which includes the four impressive towers topped off with cupolas with round ball-like golden urns and middle draw span, with particularities of Russian reality in the late 18th century, the Lomonosov bridge initially was meant as a part of a an ambitious seven-bridge building project on the Fontanka River (only three bridges - the Lomonosov bridge, Anichkov and Stary Kalinkin bridges - have preserved till this day) which was worked out by the French engineer Perrone. The Lomonosov bridge that originally bore the name of Chernishev Bridge after General G. Chernishev who played important roles in battles near Narva and Poltava, consisted of three identical spans closed off with handsome stone arches and the middle span was designed to draw up to allow smaller vessels and barges to pass through. In the course of the time due to the growing maritime traffic on the Fontanka River, the bridge undergone several reconstructions. For instance, in 1912 under the supervision of architect I. Fomin and engineer A. Pshenitsky the wooden draw span was replaced with more durable metal beams, the four handsome stone obelisks with ornate six-sided lamps in the image of a sea horse were added to each corner of the bridge.
