LIEUTENANT SCHMIDT BRIDGE Beyond the Academy of Arts runs the Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment, then comes the first permanent bridge across Neva – the Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge, noted for the unique and decorative pavilions and lamps, as well as for the beautiful railings, which are adorned with images of ornate sea horses. The first bridge to unite the banks of the Neva River and the first bridge on the course from the Gulf of Finland to the center of the Northern Capital, the Lieutenant Schmidt bridge (former known as Nikolaevsky Bridge) appeared on this site in the middle of the 19th century and was named after Lieutenant Peter Schmidt – a Russian officer and a hero of the 1905 revolution, who organized uprising of the Black Sea Fleet and was executed by the tsarist government. There is a memorial plaque in his honor hanging on a wall of the pavilion at the central part of the bridge. Playing an important role as an entryway for sea-going vessels into the city, the 24 meters wide and 331 meters long Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge boasts eight spans with the two middle spans drawing up like wings under the power of an electrical system and offers fine panoramic views of the city's historic and picturesque Admiralty and University Embankments.
