ITALIAN BRIDGE
One of several noteworthy pedestrian bridges of St. Petersburg, the 19th century classical-styled Italian Bridge with its wonderful ornately decorated lampposts, lamps, railings and gird spans the meandering Griboedov Canal not far from the Italianskaya Street (hence the name of the bridge).
Initially, it was a single span wooden bridge, built on this site at the end of the 19th century, but later on it undergone reconstructions several times: in 1955 according to the plans of architect V.Vasilkovsky and engineer A.Guttsait a new single-span metal girder bridge with welded girders supporting the bridge's span appeared; and later the bridge was lengthened to 19,5 meters and a widened to 3 meters. Located in the very city centre surrounded by numerous architectural masterpieces, the bridge suits the neighboring monuments and magnificent edifices perfectly since it boasts elegant decoration: unique railings made of round bars with opening up buds between the oval shaped cast-iron posts with superimposed decorations, beautiful floor lamps and lanterns adorning each end of the bridge, ornately decorated facades of the side girders, exquisite floor lamps in the style of Russian classicism, charming six-sided lanterns –every minute detail merits attention and blends in harmoniously with the granite embankment of te Griboedov Canal.
