BLUE BRIDGE
All in all there are 4 “coloured” bridges in St.Petersburg – the Red, Green, Orange and Blue bridges – and the later one is widest bridge in the Northern Venice, measuring 32,5 meters long and 97,3 meters wide. Situated in the very heart of the historical city center, right in front of the Mariinsky Palace, the Blue Bridge plays an important role in the St. Isaac's square harmonious architectural ensemble, spanning the Originally, it was a wooden drawbridge resting on stone supports built in the 1730s and painted blue (hence the name), but in 1818 the Blue bridge was transformed into a cast-iron one-bay arched bridge according to the design of the architect V. Geste. In 1843, engineer E.A. Adam widened the Blue Bridge in the direction of Red Bridge and pereulok Antonenko to its present day width. Being decorated with the iron railings in the same design as the beautiful and unique railings which adorn the banks of the Moika River embankment, the Blue Bridge, which is almost three times as wide as it is long, is currently being used as a parking lot.
